Floyd and I had two beers each and shared a plate of quesadilla appetizers at a local Mexican restaurant while sifting through the private internet life of Josefina Sanchez. We were waiting for Lopes and Lacy Lou to meet us, which they had planned to do after dropping Maria Lopez back at the safe house in Huntington Beach.
“Is she gay?”
I looked away from the stack of papers that sat on the table in front of me and frowned at him. “I don’t know. I don’t think so. But, I mean, who knows? Why do you ask?”
Floyd was still studying his papers and didn’t bother to look up as he took another swig of beer. “There’s nothing so far that shows any relationship stuff. Everything I’ve seen so far could be written by her brother. This one guy is a friend from the gym, someone it seems she works out with and maybe even spars with. There’s another dude here who’s obviously a cop, and might be an old partner. Tom, no last name. But nothing that sounds like romance, to me. Can Lonnie figure out where these emails come from? Do you know?”
I shook my head. “He can get IP addresses, which I think narrows the search to a region, but that’s about it. We can have the girls over at Major Crimes research email addresses through their data providers, but there’s no guarantee they’ll come up with matching IDs. The problem with email is I can create an address right now, ‘Bob Bitchin’ at Gmail,’ and register it to Bobby Brown. There’s no verifications involved.”
He reached for a slice of the quesadilla and paused with it over the glob of sour cream on the plate. “It’s probably already taken, Dickie. But you could maybe go with Dumbass Dickie at Gmail dot com.” He shoved half of the quesadilla into his mouth and smiled while chewing it.
My phone vibrated on the table and I saw it was Lopes calling in. I pushed the green button and lifted the phone to my face. “What’s up, buddy?”
“Lacy got a break on a case she was working with Norris, so I’m going to roll with her to Twin Towers to talk to an inmate. We can catch up with you guys later or tomorrow. I don’t know how long we’ll be.”
I looked over at Floyd. “They’re going to county to interview someone. How long are we going to be here?”
Floyd glanced at his watch while Lopes said into my ear, “That’s right, check with your sister.”
“I’m about ready to go now,” Floyd said. “I can look at this stuff at home and see the wife and kids before Sancho moves in and they start calling him ‘Daddy.’”
“Let’s catch up tomorrow,” I told Lopes. We disconnected and I looked at Floyd. “She probably already does.”
He frowned, not catching it.
“Cindy. She probably calls Sancho, ‘Daddy.’”
He flipped me off and went back to reading and drinking his beer.
After finishing our beers, Floyd and I parted company and each of us headed to our homes.
